Astrology is the study of the influence of planets on human affairs and earthly events. The position of the planets at the exact moment of your birth reflect your character and, therefore, your destiny.
In astrology, we create charts which show the position of the planets at various times. A chart of the planets' positions at your time of birth is called a Destiny (or Natal) Chart, whereas a chart depicting the relationship between the planets at the time of your birth and at a particular time in the present is called a Forecast (or Transit) Chart. Further, a chart depicting the relationship between the planets' positions at your time of birth and the birth of another person, is called a Friends & Lovers (or Synastry) Chart.
These charts are illustrated in a circle, called the elliptic. This is the plane on which the earth orbits around the sun each year. The chart is divided into twelve sections of 30° each, these sections representing the signs of the Zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. This is the outer circle shown in the charts.
The charts show the positions of the planets in relation to the Zodiac signs as if viewed from earth, at a given time, and the planets are said to fall within particular signs. The planets differing human drives and each sign represents a set of human characteristics. When asked which "sign" you are, when in your reply - say, Virgo - you are referring to your Sun Sign, the sign the Sun occupied at the time of your birth.
The inner circle of the charts is also divided into 12 sections, called Houses and each deals with certain areas of our lives. Putting this all together, by studying the positions of the planets (in terms of which signs and houses they fall) and the relationship between the planets (these relationships are known as Aspects) we can make predictions.
